This notice explains what happens to personal data when you write to us or use the contact form.

What we hold, and why

If you write, we hold your name, address and the content of your message. We use it to answer you and, where your message concerns an entry, to check and correct that entry. The lawful basis is our legitimate interest in running an editorial site and answering correspondence.

How long

Correspondence is kept while the matter is open and for a reasonable period afterwards, so that a later message can be read in context, and is then deleted. Material that has led to a published correction is kept as part of our editorial record.

Server logs

Our host writes server logs containing an address, a timestamp and the page requested. These are held briefly for security and to keep the site running, and are not used to build any profile of a visitor.

No analytics, no trackers

There is no analytics on this site, no tracking of any kind and no third party cookies. The only script we load is the one that opens and closes the menu on a small screen, and it stores nothing.

Hosting and transfers

The site is served by a hosting provider on our behalf, and that provider processes data only on our instructions. Where data reaches a country outside your own, it is transferred under the safeguards the law provides for.

Your rights

You may ask for access to your data, for correction or erasure, for restriction of processing, for portability, and you may object to processing based on legitimate interest. Write to the address above. You may also complain to your national supervisory authority.
